Setup guides

Prepare, then test carefully.

Preview a blocklist, install it in the DNS software you already use, and test one device before relying on it.

The routine

Make one reversible change at a time.

Use the setup helper to preview and download compatible rules. If subscriptions are enabled for your account, you can also save the list and create a scoped feed link in Feeds and keys.

Pi-hole

Add, update, verify

  1. For a manual setup, add exported plain domains as exact deny entries. For a Hosts export, use the hostname from each 0.0.0.0 domain.example line with pihole deny domain.example or Exact Deny in the web interface.
  2. For a subscription, add a Plain domains feed link to your subscribed lists and run pihole updateGravity.
  3. Track only the manual entries you newly add, then confirm the rules are active and test a device. Remove those entries with pihole deny remove domain.example, or remove the subscription to undo the change. Run gravity again after removing a subscription.

AdGuard Home

Use the matching format

  1. For a manual setup, paste the compatible exported rules into Custom filtering rules.
  2. For a subscription, add the issued feed URL under DNS blocklists and run an update.
  3. Confirm the rules are active, then test a device. Remove the custom rules or disable or remove the subscription to undo the change.

Format and delivery

Match the tool and the scope

Plain domains and Hosts exports express exact rules; a Hosts line uses the hostname after 0.0.0.0. Supported Adblock-style output expresses a domain and its subdomains. The preview offers only formats that preserve the rules you selected.

In Feeds and keys, copy the combined link for a single subscription. For separate delivery, copy each text part link and add each as a subscription. AdGuard Home can use an exact Hosts list and a subtree Adblock-style list side by side.

After installation

Check one device, then explain a result.

Check this device tests the browser and network you use to open it where the check is enabled. Why blocked? shows which published rules match a hostname and the evidence behind them.

Troubleshoot an unexpected result

Check that the list loaded and the device is using your DNS resolver. DNS caches, local allowlists, encrypted DNS, and switching networks can change what you see. Disable or remove the subscription if it blocks something you need.

Revoking a link stops new downloads. Remove its subscription and refresh your resolver to clear the rules it has already loaded.
